YCE scribe faults Abdulsalami’s narrative on Abiola’s death
Secretary-General of Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), Dr. Kunle Olajide, yesterday, faulted the statement by former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, that the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993, Presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola, was not killed.
Abubakar, in a live programme, had said Abiola died after falling ill in detention.
Olajide said the account was hard for him to believe and that many Nigerians would not buy the story in its entirety.
He said: “General Abdulsalami Abubakar has told us apparently what he knew about the transition of Chief M.K.O. Abiola. It is left for us to distil the information he has given. But I don’t believe his entire story about Abiola’s death.
“If it is true that Abiola was ill, that he instructed them to bring him to meet Ambassador Pickering…a sick man would either be restricted to a sickbed in prison or in the hospital.
“So, for me, I don’t believe him and I am sure most Nigerians will not believe the story. Anyway, Abiola is dead. There is hardly what anyone can do about it.”
