Yobe declares emergency on education sector, Ogun considers move

Governor Maimala Buni of Yobe State yesterday declared a state of emergency in the education sector to build foundation for future generations.He stressed that education, was the bedrock of any meaningful development for a society or nation move to greater socioeconomic heights.

Buni made the declaration in his inaugural speech to the people at Government House, Damaturu, saying: “I hereby declare a state of emergency on primary and secondary education in Yobe. This will enable the state government build a solid and robust foundation for the advancement of education in the state.

Meanwhile, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun yesterday hinted that his administration may declare a state of emergency in the state’s education sector. Abiodun, who assumed duties yesterday, stated this after separate closed-door meetings with permanent secretaries, State Head of Service (HOS), Lanre Bisiriyu and security chiefs.

Speaking to journalists after the meetings, he lamented the poor standard of education in the state, stressing that the performance of students in external examinations in the state have been poor.His words: “We are going to focus more on primary and tertiary education. We will bring our education sector up to standard.

“We have the largest number of tertiary institutions in this state. However, the performances of our students are not encouraging and we have to change that so we may be declaring a state of emergency in the education sector.”
