Yoruba Youth Council warns against Politicisation of electoral reforms

The Yoruba Youth Council has cautioned against the politicisation of electoral reforms in Nigeria, following a planned protest against the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu.
The council views the protest as a thinly veiled attempt to undermine the independence of INEC and disrupt the electoral process.
According to the Yoruba Youth Council, the protest is a misguided effort to exploit perceived grievances for political gain.
The council believes that electoral reforms should be driven by a genuine desire to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy, rather than by partisan interests.
The council has called on Nigerians to be wary of attempts to politicize electoral reforms and to support efforts to strengthen the independence and credibility of INEC.
They also urged the National Assembly to prioritise electoral reforms that promote transparency, accountability, and fairness.
In a statement, Comrade Eric Oluwole, National President of the Yoruba Youth Council, emphasised the need for Nigerians to remain vigilant and protect the integrity of the electoral process.
The statement reads: ““Let it be known that the Yoruba Youth Council stands against this ill-advised and ill-motivated protest. It is evident that this movement seeks to discredit the government of President Bola Tinubu, who has been unwavering in his efforts to transform Nigeria into an economic powerhouse for the benefit of all citizens.
“We call on security agencies across the country to remain vigilant and thwart any attempts to disrupt national peace. Such baseless and provocative actions are a threat to the stability of our nation and must not be tolerated.
“The Yoruba Youth Council proudly supports Prof Mahmood Yakubu and his commendable efforts in reforming Nigeria’s electoral system. His reforms have garnered global recognition, and it is crucial that we collectively reject attempts to derail these advancements through spurious and divisive protests.
“We urge Nigerians to remain vigilant against unpatriotic elements who seek to exploit our democracy for personal gains. Together, we must protect our nation’s peace, stability, and progress.”
