You conducted Nigeria’s worst elections, Yoruba youths tackle Obasanjo
Yoruba Youth Socio-Cultural Association (YYSA), on Monday, berated former President Olusegun Obasanjo for its uncomplimentary remarks on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the leadership style of President Bola Tinubu.
The National President of YYSA, Olalekan Hammed, in a statement, urged the international community to ignore Obasanjo.
Hammed said all the chairmen appointed by Obasanjo had a record of poor election conduct.
“Yoruba Youth Socio-Cultural Association (YYSA) said that the two INEC chairmen that were appointed by the administration of former President Obasanjo had a record of most poorly conducted elections in Nigeria,” Hammed said.
“Dr. Abel Guobada happened to be the chairman that was appointed to lead the commission between year 2000 – 2005 by former president Obasanjo-led administration.
“Prior to that time, in 1999 during the General Abubakar Abdulsalam regime as head of state, the general election that was conducted had 21 states won by PDP, APP 9 while six states were won by the Alliance for Democracy (AD).
“Desperately, in 2003, former President Obasanjo influenced Dr. Abel Guobada led INEC to rig many states in favour of PDP.
“In fact, five of the six states in the Southwest region were captured only Lagos escaped that forceful defeat.
“In 2005, Ex-President Obasanjo appointed Prof. Maurice Iwu who took over from Dr. Abel Guobada after he had completed his five-year term in office.
“Two years later, precisely in 2007, former president Obasanjo nominated late Umar Musa Yar’Adua as PDP presidential candidate and said it publicly during electioneering that election is a do-or-die affair.
“Of course, his statement followed with action as many elections were rigged across the country.
“Surprisedly, former President Umar Musa Yar’Adua couldn’t hide the truth. He made it known to the whole world that the election that brought him to power was manipulated for some reasons.”
The youth leader said Obasanjo had been an “antagonist and long-time hater of President Bola Tinubu since he was a governor in Lagos State.
“Obasanjo’s statements or remarks as regards President Tinubu or any of his official shouldn’t be taken seriously as he judgement, analysis and criticism deeply becloud with emotion.”
He urged the international community to see Obasanjo’s comments as unpopular and unworthy of being noted.
