Youth coalition urges governments to combat rising insecurity in Niger North

  • Threatens legal action over inaction of authorities

The Coalition of Niger North Youth Forum (CNNYF) has joined forces with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Niger State Branch, to call for urgent action from both the Federal and Niger State Governments to address escalating security challenges in the Niger North Senatorial District.

In an emergency meeting aimed at discussing the deteriorating security situation, the forum expressed serious concerns over frequent attacks on communities across the eight local government areas.

‎National Director of Contacts and Mobilization, CNNYF, Bello Junaidu-Ahmed, in a statement said, “Residents of Niger North have faced relentless attacks by armed bandits and criminal elements, leading to the burning of homes, theft of thousands of cattle, and the abduction of school children.

“Despite our repeated efforts, including official letters, press briefings, and participation in security summits, the government has taken no tangible action to alleviate the suffering of the people.”

The coalition noted that despite the ongoing violence and numerous appeals for help, there has been little meaningful government intervention.

The statement highlighted grave consequences resulting from the prolonged insecurity, pointing out that “thousands of school children have been forced out of classrooms, illiteracy rates among youths have skyrocketed, and countless businesses have collapsed. Many families have been displaced, further compounding the crisis.”

In light of these issues, CNNYF has issued a two-week ultimatum for the Federal and Niger State Governments to deploy effective measures to restore peace and security in the region.

“If no action is taken within this period, we will be compelled to take legal action against the governments for failing to protect the lives and property of citizens,” Ahmed warned.

The coalition’s demands reflect a growing frustration over the government’s inability to address the urgent security issues threatening the lives and livelihoods of residents in Niger North.
