Youth groups reject October protest against Tinubu

No fewer than 60 youth organisations and prominent youth leaders, under the auspices of the Nigeria Youth Organization (NYO), have announced that their members will not participate in the rumoured national protest against President Bola Tinubu’s administration scheduled for October 1.

President of the NYO, Duke Alamboye, conveyed this stance during a courtesy visit to Dr. Dennis Otuaro, the administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), in Abuja.

A press release issued by Mr. Igoniko Oduma, the Special Assistant on Media to the PAP Administrator, on Thursday, confirmed the youth leaders’ position.

He outlined plans for a world press conference and a youth summit to sensitise Nigerians about the need to avoid the planned demonstration.

Alamboye urged young people to embrace constructive dialogue and utilise available channels to express their views, stressing that peaceful engagement is preferable to protests that could disrupt national stability.

“Concerning the nation’s state, we are not unaware of the agitation from certain quarters calling for a nationwide protest on October 1, 2024. It is a protest against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government,” he said.

“As youth leaders and lovers of peace and national advancement, the Nigeria Youth Organization would like to inform you of our plan and intention to hold a world press conference on the 23rd of September, 2024, geared towards sensitising the average Nigerian youth on the need to shun the planned protest.

“We want people to seek dialogue as a better reconciliation tool for venting their grievances. We also plan to organise a summit on October 1st, 2024, as a follow-up to the world press conference. We anticipate that all well-meaning stakeholders will play vital roles in charting a better cause for our youths.”

Several youth leaders echoed Alamboye’s sentiments, expressing support for President Tinubu. In response, Otuaro commended the youth leaders for their decision, noting Tinubu’s commitment to empowering young people through various appointments in his administration.

Otuaro urged the youth not to be swayed by those attempting to manipulate them into unpatriotic actions.

He said, “Mr. President means well for the country… Most of those championing the so-called protest are only seeking attention.” He encouraged young people to present their grievances through constructive dialogue rather than protests.
