Youths deserve more than minister, aide portfolios, group declares

National Youths Inclusive in Governance Organisation (NYIGO) is advocating for more inclusion of young Nigerians in governance, saying that their population is more than citizens of the United Kingdom.

According to the group, the older generation has reduced the vibrant, knowledgeable and innovative portion of the country to sports minister and special advisers on sports and youth development at various levels of government.

At the North East ‘Strategic Meeting’ in Bauchi, on Sunday, the Convener of NYIGO, Yusuf Banki, said: “It is sad that our youths are making themselves available for the political class to be used in fomenting trouble during elections.

“I always say that the only positions for the youth are either national/state youth leader of a party or commissioner for youths and sports development. No portfolio is given to a young person aside from these. We believe that no one learns to drive by sitting on a passenger’s seat. One must be given the car and be shown how to drive.”

Banki urged the youths to step forward for the leading positions, as power would not be given to them on the platter of gold.
