The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) says it has deployed more than 2,000 of its personnel across Anambra to enforce highway regulations during the Christmas season.

The Anambra Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Sunday Ajayi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Thursday that the personnel included both regular and special marshals.

Ajayi, who said that the officers, including those from other law enforcement agencies would be positioned at junctions and trouble spots identified by the commission, urged motorists and other road users to remain calm during the period.

He said that the operation would begin at 6am and end at 8pm daily.

“As a command, we commenced our special Christmas/New Year traffic control enforcement on Monday.

“So people will be seeing us where otherwise we have not been showing presence because we had to bring our staff together to ensure that we achieve this.

“And we want to appeal to the general public at this point that as much as we assure them that our visibility will be very high at junctions and flash points, which we have identified already, we want people to be calm.

“We want people to show love for others, we want people to obey the law.

“We should shun lane jumping, we should equally shun excessive loading, excessive speeding, drunk driving during this period.

“If we do all these, we will get better. If we look at the regulars and the special marshals, we will be looking at over 2000 people to be on the road.

“ And I must tell you that the operational period too has been slightly expanded.”
