Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has vowed to sign the death warrants of individuals found guilty in the recent killing of Fatima Abubakar and her six children in Kano.
The governor also extended the same stance to convicts in the case of late Hanifa Abubakar, a five-year-old girl who was poisoned and buried in a shallow grave by the proprietor of her school, Abdulmaliq Tanko, about four years ago.
It would be recalled that the immediate past governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, had made a similar pledge following Hanifa’s murder, yet Tanko remains in custody at the Kano Correctional Centre despite being convicted in two separate judgments for culpable homicide.
According to Governor Yusuf, “I will not hesitate to sign the death warrant of any suspect found guilty in the killings of the seven family members. The same action would be applied to the killers of Hanifa and the Gezawa arsonists who set many people ablaze in the mosque during prayers.”
In a move to ensure justice, the governor directed the Office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to fast-track the prosecution of suspects arrested in connection with the murder of the family.
He made the declaration on Wednesday when he led top government officials to the Dorayi Quarters residence of the deceased family during a condolence visit.
Expressing deep regret over the gruesome killings that shocked the state last Saturday, the governor assured residents that due diligence would be observed in handling the case to curb heinous crimes in the state.
Governor Yusuf, who had earlier visited the headquarters of the Kano State Police Command for a briefing on the investigation, commended the synergy among security agencies and their swift action, which led to the arrest of suspects.
Meanwhile, the governor approved the sponsorship of the bereaved husband, who lost his entire family, for the 2026 Hajj and Umrah.
He also approved the provision of a new and befitting house as part of efforts to rehabilitate him and restore his hope for a better life.
The governor further assured that the state government would take full responsibility for the man’s welfare and support him to remarry, should he find a suitable life partner, while providing the necessary assistance to enable him to rebuild his life.
In a related development, Governor Yusuf also paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Dr. Bature AbdulAziz, President of the National Patriotic Elders Forum for Peace and Unity, to commiserate with them over his death.
The governor described the late Dr. AbdulAziz as a patriotic elder and peace advocate whose contributions to unity and national development would be remembered, and prayed for Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
Yusuf equally visited Baba Umar, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Private and Voluntary Schools Board, to condole with him over the death of his mother.
