GOVERNOR Abdukarim Yari of Zamfara State at the weekend urged the support and understanding of Nigerians, especially his fellow members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for President Muhammadu Buhari to steer the ship of Nigeria from the near wreck it found itself before Buhari took over the mantle of leadership.

Speaking with reporters in Abuja, the governor, who is the Chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), said the President deserved understanding of all Nigerians, especially with the downward global economic recession, which had impacted negatively on the country’s only export, the oil.

Yari’s position is coming against reports of perceived unhappiness against the President, who is barely five months old in office, especially from the North, saying the North has no reason to complain against the President.

His words: “I have no idea that they are not happy because if anyone can say that, it should not be the North alone, it should be all Nigerians but they all should understand how Buhari emerged as President and the situation he met on ground on the issue of economy, which is global.”

He noted that despite the fact that the global leaders were trying hard to play down the economic recession, there was bad signal and they are managing it at the top level but in the actual sense.

Yari further said: “The only countries that are doing well are America and India, so, there is significant drop in GDP globally except America and India. So, it is not about Buhari alone.

“Buhari, of course, came with a good agenda and if Nigerians can give him the chance to work, definitely, he will deliver the campaign promises and at the same time, the issue of security, energy, productivity and discipline in the service, what he has achieved within the five months is remarkable and I’ll be surprised for anyone to say he or she is not happy. Maybe they are not happy because he did not consult in the selection of ministers, but in general terms, he has done well.

“As of today, taking the crude oil which was $115, $116 years back and the production cost was about $38 and today, we are selling oil at $46 or $50 and still our production cost is $38 how much is the inflow of cash to government?

So, if you look at it, you will ask yourself how this government is surviving because if the government relies on this commodity to earn exchange and funding for its expenditure, you will be forced to ask how they are doing it?.

“Therefore, I believe the President is doing well and he started very well and in fact, we will experience a significant improvement in the economy because all the leakages are going to be blocked by introducing the Single Treasury Account (TSA).”
