Zamfara state government has constituted a twelve member committee that will ensure enforcement and compliances of International Code of Marketing OF Breast Milk Substitute (BMS).
Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Health, Dr Lawal Umar Bungudu announced this yesterday at the launching and distribution of BMS code publication supported by Save the Children and World Health Organisation held in Gusau, said the aim of the code is to protect Breastfeeding from the aggressive promotional campaigns by Infant Food Manufacturers (IFM), which was linked to the alarming decline in Breastfeeding in the country, coupled with increase in rates of infant morbidity and mortality.
He said the overall aim of the code is to ensure children are safe from all form of diseases at their early days through protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding for children particularly when they are below six month.
