ASUU will never learn because like most Nigerians they are completely ignorant of the problem of Nigeria. Nigerian economy is based on selling crude oil. The foreign exchange earned is partly converted to naira and shared between the three tiers of government. They pay salaries, contractors and consultants. The private sector businesses go to the banks with naira collect the remaining foreign exchange to import goods and services for our consumption. Our economy is thus dependent on the amount of naira available compared to the amount of foreign exchange in the market. As the amount of naira in our pockets increase without corresponding increase in foreign currencies the exchange rate worsens. Since 1980s to date the value of naira has gone from almost 1 to 1 dollar to 470 to 1 What ASUU has been doing is to negotiate more naira to improve their purchasing power. At the rate at which we are all going after paying salaries of lecturers we will not have money for other things. As academicians they should know that you can not solve a system dysfunction by treating the problem of a small part of the system. We need to solve the problem of our consumption oriented system wholistically a d transform gradually to a productive system. ASUU should be at the vanguard to reverse upward a horrible system that is going down the cliff rather than the selfish pursuit of narrow group interest that is dangerously on the wa3 down. Of course the press will
