I AM indeed very privileged to write this tribute on behalf of the numerous friends who have benefitted immensely from the clinical efficiency, methodological meticulousness and generosity of spirit of Dr. Alex Enoma Bazuaye-Ekwuyasi who is the Medical Director, Consultant Physician and Chest Specialist at his own Humanity Hospital, in Warri. Indeed, as a creative scholar, a gifted practitioner, a hardworking and an outstanding former Senior Registrar, department of medicine at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, we thank Almighty God for his life as he celebrates his four decades of his long and distinguished career at 60 years old today.

As a research associate (academic staff) department of medicine, Cardiothoracic Centre, Free Man Hospital, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England, but also as an accomplished administrator, he was the chief executive officer and medical director of humanity family health foundation as well as a member, board of director, Edo State Hospital Management Board. As a Consultant Physician and Head of Department of medicine, Central Hospital Benin and Warri, where his tenure heralded the establishment of new departments, Dr. Bazuaye-Ekwuyasi became member, Nigerian Thoracic society as well as that of British Thoracic society and was a fellow, West African Post-graduate Medical College in 1990.

A man of little words, his understated calmness and dignified quiet demeanour, covered a strong will and character; integrity, principle and selflessness. These were the hallmarks of the leadership qualities he possessed when he established his Humanity Hospital in Effurun in 1992. His brilliance as a scholar and hardworking student paid off when he was awarded the then Bendel State Government’s scholarship to read Clinical Medicine at the prestigious University of Benin School of Medicine in 1976.

All of us as his patients at his Humanity Hospital recall with nostalgia his trademark of immaculately clean suits and generous smiles; he was and is conscientious and cared for us his patients. He was always available, extremely patient and courteous to all. He simply took unselfish pride in the attainment of excellent health recovery of his patients. He organised free medical screening exercise for the poor and downtrodden for chronic obstructive lung diseases twice a year at his hospital.

Born on July 31, 1955, Enoma was educated at the Holy Trinity Grammar School, Sabongidda-Ora, Edo College, Benin City and the University of Benin. His previous working experience include: Senior House Officer, Senior Registrar at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital; he was consultant physician and head of department of medicine at the Central Hospital, Warri in 1991. He belongs to medical professional bodies like: member, association of physicians of Nigeria; pioneer chairman, association of general and private medical practitioners of Nigeria, Delta State branch, and past chairman, Nigerian Medical Associations, Warri Zone, Delta state.

His honorary awards and decorations include: Justice of Peace, Delta state; listed in Who is Who in Nigeria; Papal Knight of Saint Sylvester; merit award, University of Benin alumni association; Warri Zone. He has written well over 10 original academic publications in international learned journals. For the past five years, he has been an associate professor in school of medicine at Igbinedion University, Okada. He also belongs to membership of church societies in the Catholic denomination: Supreme Physician, Knight of Saint Mulumba, Nigeria; member, Warri Catholic diocesan finance committee; chairman, diocesan board on natural family planning; member, Sacred Heart of Jesus and immaculate Heart of Mary society and vice-president, association of Papal Knight and Medolist, Benin ecclesiastic province.

Alex is married to Dr. (Lady) Anne Bazuaye and they have five lovely daughters. Anne runs a secondary and primary school, in Warri called New Era Model School. In their community service, therefore, Alex and Anne open the doors of their hospital and school to the poor and the weak; the meek and the gentle; the wretched and the downtrodden people of Nigeria. That is why God will always continue to bless them abundantly because they have touched so many people’s lives. For example, in my daughter’s recent wedding, Alex and Anne were one of the pillars of support God used to make the wedding a huge success. Apart from community service, they both are involved in marriage counselling, family planning and family health education. Sixty hearty cheers to you on your birthday, Alex.
