Tinubu’s unfinished national surgery: Compelling case for 2nd term

As we consider the next chapter in Nigeria’s story, it’s clear that President Bola Tinubu’s experience, leadership and vision are essential to our continued progress. A second term would provide the stability and continuity needed to build on the foundations laid in his first term. Fellow Nigerians, today, we are at a critical juncture in our nation’s history. President Tinubu’s remarkable achievements and visionary leadership have undoubtedly set Nigeria on a path to greatness. As we look to the future, it is imperative that we continue on this trajectory of progress and development.

At this juncture it is compelling that we dispassionately examine some critical developmental incidents or measures taken by this administration that clearly stand it out for a return ticket just as it is often said that “one good term deserves another”

President Tinubu’s tenure has been marked by painful but necessary bold reforms, innovative policies, and a commitment to empowering Nigerians. It is now important to refresh our collective memories about some of these achievement that honestly speaking are crucial and very critical to our future fortunes and wellbeing as a country.

Fuel subsidy removal saved Nigeria ₦4 trillion annually, redirected to critical infrastructure and social programmes

Exchange rate unification: Eliminated multiple exchange rates, increased foreign exchange inflows by $3 billion and wipe out unimaginable corruption in the sector.

Growth in foreign reserves which has stabilised foreign reserves around $33.95 billions.

Nigeria’ recent post on trade surplus of 6.83 billion dollars  as reported by J P Morgan, the first in several years, is a testament to some of the economic wizardry of the Tinubu government.

Port Harcourt refinery rehabilitation expected to refine 60,000 barrels of crude oil daily, reducing reliance on imported fuel

Second Niger Bridge Completion which enhanced connectivity for 40 million people in the South-East region a further boost for the region’s economy and some of the neighbouring South South stated.

Road construction: Whopping ₦2.2 trillion has been spent on road construction/rehabilitation across the country in the last two years of the Tinubu’s administration. Begging for mentioning is the world-class Lagos-Calabar Highway way cutting across eleven states and linking over 60 million people and their economy.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal road without mincing word and without any doubt, is a game-changer.

It is a monumental development that will unlock economic potential, create thousands of jobs, and spur real estate development along the coastal region.

Thousands of jobs in construction, logistics, and related industries would spring up on continuous basis. It is also expected to boost the real estate sector of the economy as it will unlock housing and tourism development potentials as well as increasing values of  property along the expanse corridor investment.

It will have catalyst effect of Improve reducing transportation costs, increasing trade efficiency and minimise loss of lives.

Also is the recently approved for construction, the multi-billion Naira Badagry-Sokoto Highway.

Social welfare and education student loan Scheme: No fewer than 500,000 students who have applied for interest-free loans to improve access to tertiary education.

Currently the Nigerian Education Loan Fund a novel creation of this administration has  disbursed about  N2.5 billion to hundreds  of thousands of students across tertiary institutions in the country.
Security and Agriculture:
It is indeed note-worthy that the food crisis threatening the country on the eve of the take of the administration has today become history, despite the problem of herders/farmers clashes in some parts of the country.

For instance the price of rice that hit the roof about two years ago has drastically come down by nearly 50 per cent.

It is also important to make reference to the government’s conscious policy of promoting and patronising made in Nigeria product which recently culminated in the recently launched “Nigeria First policy. Recent reports where import and reliance on foreign goods has dropped by over 30 per cent. This is being buoyed by the current policy of direct distribution of millions of fertiliser to five farmers.

Enhanced security measures: In the area of defence and security, the administration has continued to demonstrate it unwavering readiness to end terrorism; banditry and other forms of insurgency by committing a great significant of its annual budget to the sector. In 2024 alone the sector received N3.2 trillion in the current budget N4.91 trillion was doled out to defence and security. to national security, 25 per cent reduction in banditry and kidnapping incidents.

Still in the area of security, the administration has completed processes that will lead to the establishment of national forest guard in every state, where every state will recruit its own local people to secure and protest its forest against marauders. It is believed thus could be an effective antidote against kidnapping and banditry.

Local government autonomy: This is seen as a master-stroke by this administration which had never happened in the life of past Republics to liberate the local government system from the armstrong and armtwisting dominations by state governments. This is indeed a strategic move to empower grassroot governance

The CNG initiative flagged off with the launching of 30 hybrid CNG buses, retrofitted trains to reduce travel costs

Tax reforms: This indeed is one of the bold revolution of the Tinubu administration expected to challenge every state government to the more identify untapped economic potentials for common benefit between each state and the federal government on one and the people as a whole on the other hand. It will further boost government’s revenue, stabilise foreign exchange regime.

We need to remind ourselves that governance is a share responsibility, it is not the sole responsibility of the presidency where the President receives the blame for what others tiers and arms of government ought to do as statutory constitutional duties.

So we need to always do the needful that will compel other tiers and arms of government to diligently perform their constitutional responsibilities that they will exercise the moral challenge and fear of God to do what is right for the benefits of all Nigerians and most importantly the hapless ordinary Nigerians.
