In a bid to revolutionize grassroots development in Nigeria, the Concern for Public Accountability and Development (COPAD) has launched its Local Impact Program (CLIP). This initiative aims to establish a presence in every Local Government Area, fostering a culture of accountability, education, and community-driven development. We spoke with Dr. Bowo Olagbegi, a key stakeholder in COPAD, to gain insight into the organization’s vision and objectives.
According to Dr. Olagbegi, COPAD’s ultimate goal is to create a society where communities are empowered to demand transparency, good governance, and inclusive development. “We believe that by working together with local communities and government officials, we can create a better future for our society,” he said. “Our focus is on promoting and supporting the efforts of local government areas, recognizing that they are best positioned to understand the needs of their communities.”
Reginald Owen-Ode, another key figure of CLIP, previously highlighted the importance of CLIP in promoting holistic education, accountability, and development at the grassroots level. “Our initiative, CLIP, is designed to promote holistic education, accountability, and development at the grassroots level,” he said. “We want to empower local communities to take ownership of their development and hold their leaders accountable.”
COPAD’s approach involves establishing local chapters in every Local Government Area, engaging communities, and promoting social impact. The organization has already made significant strides in training public and private school teachers, advocating educational policies, empowering entrepreneurship and social development, and creating a platform for mentors to support the youth in different communities.
“We’re committed to working closely with local government officials to identify areas where we can provide support and resources,” Dr. Olagbegi emphasized. “By doing so, we can help them deliver on their promises to their constituents and improve the overall quality of life in their communities.”
When asked about the challenges they anticipate, Dr. Olagbegi noted, “One of the biggest hurdles we face is getting local government officials to buy into our vision. However, we believe that by working together, we can achieve great things. We’re willing to listen to their concerns and work collaboratively to find solutions that benefit everyone.”
Despite these challenges, COPAD remains optimistic about the potential impact of CLIP. “We’re excited about the prospect of having a desk in every local government area, showcasing our comparative advantage and supporting the good work of local authorities,” Dr. Olagbegi said. “This will enable us to provide targeted support and resources to local governments, helping them to deliver on their development priorities.”
Dr. Olagbegi also highlighted the importance of accountability and transparency in local government administration. “We want to empower local communities to hold their leaders accountable and demand transparency in governance,” he said. “By doing so, we can promote good governance and ensure that resources are used effectively to benefit the community.”
As COPAD embarks on this ambitious journey, it’s clear that the organization is driven by a passion for grassroots development and a commitment to creating positive change. “Ultimately, our goal is to create a better future for our communities,” Dr. Olagbegi concluded. “We believe that by working together with local government areas, we can make a real difference in the lives of Nigerians and promote sustainable development.’
