Democracy's definition says it is the government of the people by the people and for the people. But, are we there now or still crawling when Nigeria

Sir: Democracy’s definition says it is the government of the people by the people and for the people. But, are we there now or still crawling when Nigeria has already celebrated 62 years of Independence Anniversary recently and preparing for another election in 2023; what have we achieved?

How will elected officers in different offices account for their stewardship? Do they deserve another term? And for those who have completed their tenure, will they see the generality of Nigerians as their true brothers and sisters?

By historical evaluation, Nigeria has come of age and Nigerians are supposed to be proud of our fatherland in terms of every good thing God has endowed us with ranging from crude oil, columbites, forest, coal and other natural resources; but unfortunately, we are still begging for what belongs to every one of us, we are serious victims of poverty in our God-given nation that is flowing with milk and honey.

Most youths are victims of poverty and unemployment and they are seriously looking for a way of breaking that yoke of poverty and unemployment. All over the world, governments determine the faith of the youths by creating an enabling environment and employment opportunities for them.

Those with entrepreneurial skills should be given loans without collateral so as to get access to such loans because you cannot expect a youth that is about to start living to have collateral like buildings or land. Where will she get those collaterals of long-term investment from? He needs to start working towards that goal step by step.

I believe the visions of our nationalists are not what we are seeing now after that liberation from the colonial masters. Obafemi Awolowo, as Premier of the Western Region from 1955, developed the Region with Cocoa, Palm Produce, and Palm Kernel and the development is still visible today.

I think it is pertinent we accept the parliamentary system that helped the late Awolowo to achieve his goals; the Parliamentary system will not be expensive to run compared to the present presidential system. Also the national cake of crude oil was not discovered by Awolowo, but he did what a million people cannot do, may the soul of the late Sage rest in perfect peace (Amen).

Awolowo opened the eyes of the western regional people through free education under the then-party programme i.e. (Action Group/UPN) and the legacy of that free education remains evergreen showing education as a tool for freedom.
