ELECTRICITY

Sir: The recent nationwide protest by organised labour against electricity price increase is welcome. The increase in electricity tariff would make the ordinary Nigerian pay more despite the prevailing economic situation affecting the purchasing power of most citizens. We would not welcome any increase in electricity tariff without government putting necessary measures in place for power supply to meet demand of consumers.

The power sector should articulate far-reaching measures in sourcing for fund in the interim before giving customers high electricity bills. The unbundling of the energy sector was received by many Nigerians with enthusiasm and hope that the issues of power failure in the country would become a thing of past. The people did not bargain for any electricity tariff at this material point in time, hence the belief that those who bought the energy sector want to recoup their money so soon at the expense of downtrodden masses.

Nigerians would not fold arms and watch some private companies impose hardship on them at the variance of our collective well being. We commend the effort of the organised labour for checking the unpatriotic acts of those who did not believe that we are passing hardship presently.

We would to call on the government of our Muhammadu Buhari to look into these issues of this electricity tariff; he should nip the move in the bud for Nigerian to start enjoying his fruits of his government.

Lokoja.
