The newly inaugurated Accord Alliance Movement (AAM), also known as the Movement for New Nigeria, has reaffirmed its support for Dr. Gbenga Joel Olawepo Hashim as the presidential candidate of the Accord Party for the 2027 general election, while passing a vote of no confidence on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over what it described as his failure to guarantee the security and welfare of Nigerians.
Speaking at the formal inauguration of the movement in Abuja on Wednesday, its Director-General, Hon. Light Adah Adoko, declared that the group remained unwavering in its support for Hashim, insisting that any attempt to deny him the party’s presidential ticket amounted to an assault on democracy and internal party processes.
Adoko said the Accord Alliance Movement was formed out of “absolute necessity” to resist what he described as a calculated attempt by some forces within the Accord Party to undermine internal democracy and frustrate Hashim’s presidential ambition.
According to him, the movement would mobilise Nigerians across the country to ensure Hashim emerges as Nigeria’s next president in 2027.
“We are gathered here today to unequivocally reaffirm our unalloyed support for Dr. Gbenga Hashim as the presidential candidate of our great party, Accord,” he said.
He alleged that certain party leaders were attempting to manipulate the party’s machinery to deny Hashim the presidential ticket despite being the sole aspirant.
“This is not about failing to satisfy electoral or party guidelines. It is a deliberate coup against justice, fairness and good conscience,” Adoko stated.
He argued that political parties are public institutions that belong to members and supporters, not private estates controlled by a privileged few.
“A political party is not a private business or a family property. It is a public trust built on the hopes, hard work and contributions of millions of ordinary Nigerians,” he said.
Adoko warned that undermining internal democracy could have grave consequences for the party, recalling that Nigeria’s democratic journey was built on the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists who resisted military dictatorship.
He described Hashim as one of those who made significant sacrifices during the struggle for democracy, saying it was only fitting for the party to honour him with its presidential ticket.
The AAM Director-General further accused unnamed forces within the party of conspiring against what he called the “New Nigeria vision,” insisting that Hashim remained the symbol of that vision.
“What we are witnessing today is a grand conspiracy against the New Nigeria vision. Dr. Gbenga Hashim is the face of that New Nigeria,” he declared.
Adoko also gave a religious interpretation to the unfolding events, describing attempts to prevent the party from fielding Hashim as its presidential candidate as opposition to what he termed a divine agenda for Nigeria.
He accused the current administration of failing to address the country’s worsening economic and security challenges, including rising insecurity, corruption, hunger, unemployment and the high cost of living.
The movement therefore passed a vote of no confidence in President Bola Tinubu, alleging that his administration had failed to uphold the constitutional responsibility of ensuring the security and welfare of Nigerians.
According to him, the Accord Alliance Movement would serve as a nationwide coalition of grassroots supporters and stakeholders committed to restoring hope, peace, unity and prosperity.
He urged members of the movement to unite behind Hashim and all Accord Party candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The time for New Nigeria is now. The old order has ended and a new political order is set to begin. Dr. Gbenga Joel Olawepo Hashim is the face of this New Nigeria,” Adoko said.
The movement concluded the event with chants of “New Nigeria” and “Gbenga Hashim,” while pledging to build what it described as one of Nigeria’s most formidable political movements ahead of the next general election.
