United Kingdom-based human rights lawyer and governorship aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State, Chief Niyi Aborisade, has expressed strong confidence that the party will record a sweeping victory in the 2027 general elections, declaring that the ADC would “shock naysayers” and take control of the state.
Aborisade, speaking with journalists in Ibadan on Tuesday, said the growing popularity of the ADC and the recent defection of former presidential candidate Peter Obi were clear indications that the party was emerging as a major political force in Nigeria.
According to him, Obi’s decision to join the ADC reflects the growing acceptance of the party among progressive-minded Nigerians dissatisfied with the performance of the current political leadership.
“Peter Obi’s defection to the ADC is not accidental. It shows clearly that the party is becoming increasingly attractive to genuine progressives across the country. Nigerians are looking for a credible alternative, and ADC is providing that platform,” he said.
The British-trained lawyer attributed the party’s rising profile in Oyo State to what he described as widespread frustration over economic hardship, unemployment, and declining living standards.
He noted that many residents were disillusioned with the ruling class’s policies, adding that prevailing economic realities had compelled citizens to seek new leadership capable of addressing their concerns.
Aborisade also described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a party in steady decline, blaming its dwindling influence on prolonged internal crises and leadership disputes.
According to him, the unresolved conflicts within the former ruling party have weakened its structure and eroded public confidence, leading to mass defections by members, especially in Oyo State.
“The crisis within the PDP has weakened its structure. Many of its members in Oyo State have realised that the party no longer offers a credible platform for political growth and good governance. That is why they are moving to the ADC in large numbers,” he said.
The human rights activist, who recently defected from the PDP to the ADC, maintained that the shift in political alignment reflected a broader desire among politicians and voters for transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.
Ahead of the 2027 polls, Aborisade disclosed that the ADC had begun intensive grassroots mobilisation across the state’s 33 local government areas, focusing on community engagement, voter education, and party expansion.
He said the party was strengthening its ward and local council structures to ensure effective mobilisation ahead of the elections.
According to him, the ADC is positioning itself to provide purposeful leadership and restore public trust in governance.
“We are building from the grassroots. Our goal is to offer the people of Oyo State a government that listens, serves, and delivers development. By 2027, Nigerians will see that ADC is ready to lead,” Aborisade added.
