APC moves to woo Bala Mohammed as gov signals defection to ADC

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has held a meeting with Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, following the governor’s indication that he may defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Yilwatda was accompanied by Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for the closed-door meeting with Mohammed.

The engagement came 24 hours after the national leadership of the ADC visited to court the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, who reportedly described the ADC as a “more viable” opposition platform amid growing dissatisfaction within his party.

Both Mohammed and Yilwatda declined to speak to journalists after the meeting. Speaking earlier, Mohammed said ADC National Chairman, Sen. David Mark, had reached out to him to strengthen ties within the opposition bloc.

“He has asked them to come to me, to reconnect me with the umbilical cord of the opposition, which I have always been part of,” Mohammed said. “As a leader of the PDP, I have also observed lingering bitterness, while our party appears headless.”

He added that despite efforts at reconciliation, little progress had been made.

“We have explored all avenues for reconciliation, but it has not worked, and our members are under intense pressure. We have set up two committees—one at the national level in Abuja, given my position as PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman, and another here—to evaluate our options. All possibilities remain open, including the ADC,” he said.

Mohammed also noted that his role as Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum had made the discussions more complex.
“We have told them we are open to joining under certain conditions,” he added.
