The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has scheduled a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting for July 24, 2025, to formally nominate a new national chairman following the resignation of Abdullahi Ganduje.
The decision was announced after an emergency NWC meeting held on Monday at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
Ganduje stepped down from his position last Friday, citing the need to focus on personal matters. His resignation was submitted through the APC national secretary, Ajibola Basiru.
Following his exit, the party appointed Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, as acting chairman pending the outcome of the NEC meeting. The appointment was made in accordance with the party’s constitution and was immediately adopted by the NWC.
During the meeting, Dalori addressed committee members, acknowledging Ganduje’s contributions to the party’s leadership since his appointment in August 2023.
“We are all aware of the significant contributions Dr. Ganduje made during his tenure,” Dalori said. He added that Ganduje’s leadership brought “experienced direction and commitment” to the APC.
Dalori stated that his appointment was not about individual ambition but about fulfilling the responsibilities expected by party members.
“This is a period for consolidation, not conflict,” he said. He urged party stakeholders to avoid internal divisions and called for unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The acting chairman also pledged to focus on party strengthening, grassroots engagement, and internal reforms, describing the coming months as critical for repositioning the APC.
He reiterated the party’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and said the APC remains committed to the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Deputy National Secretary of the APC, Festus Fuanter, told reporters after the meeting that the NEC meeting will provide the platform for formal nomination of a substantive chairman.
“The National Executive Committee is the apex body of the party. Any decision regarding leadership must receive its endorsement,” Fuanter said.
He added that the party has notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about the upcoming meeting.
In a related development, APC governors, in a statement following a strategic meeting in Benin City, described Ganduje’s resignation as a move aligned with internal reforms.
They said the change in leadership does not reflect internal crisis but is part of the party’s ongoing repositioning efforts.
