Bauchi State Caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been thrown into disarray following moves to admit Governor Bala Mohammed into the party, exposing deep divisions within its ranks.
The rift came to the fore during a caucus meeting in Abuja, where members voiced sharply contrasting positions on the political and structural consequences of the governor’s proposed defection.
In a bid to manage the growing tension, the caucus unanimously agreed to establish a high-powered committee to harmonise positions and guide engagements.
Acting Secretary of the caucus, Dabo Ismail, said the committee has been tasked with articulating the group’s conditions and expectations to the party’s national leadership should the defection materialise.
According to him, the panel would also interface with key stakeholders to ensure a smooth and inclusive negotiation process, represent the caucus in all related discussions, and provide regular updates on the progress of consultations.
While reiterating that Governor Mohammed remains welcome to join the APC, Ismail stressed the need for the party’s national leadership to carry critical stakeholders in Bauchi along in any negotiation process.
Also speaking after the meeting, Chairman of the Bauchi APC Caucus and Senator representing Bauchi North, Sama’ila Dahuwa, expressed strong dissatisfaction over what he described as a lack of prior consultation by the party’s national leadership on a matter of such magnitude.
He warned that sidelining state stakeholders undermines the principles of internal democracy, inclusiveness, and respect for established party structures.
Governor Mohammed had, on March 31, 2026, hinted at plans to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), amid shifting political alignments ahead of future elections.
His political moves drew further attention following a recent visit by APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, alongside Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, to the Bauchi Government House for a closed-door meeting.
But the opposing APC group cited the governor’s past comments on the policies of the President Bola Tinubu administration, adding that his criticisms have caused division and acrimony in governance.
