President Bola Tinubu has said that the best way to honour the late former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Professor Humphrey Nwosu, is to ensure that elections in the country are credible, transparent, and democratic.

This was stated in President Tinubu’s tribute to Prof. Nwosu, made public through a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Friday.

Prof. Nwosu was chairman of NEC from 1989 to 1993 and oversaw the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was annulled by General Ibrahim Babangida.

Before the ill-fated presidential election, Nwosu’s NEC had conducted governorship and parliamentary elections using an innovative and inexpensive Option A-4 voting system, in which voters queued behind the photographs of their chosen candidates at polling stations.

In the statement, President Tinubu said that ensuring elections reflect the people’s right to choose their leaders and shape their future is the greatest honour to champions of democracy like Prof. Nwosu.

The statement read: “President Bola Tinubu commiserates with the family, friends, and associates of Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, a former chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), who died in a U.S. hospital on October 24.

“The President holds fond memories of Nwosu as a bold and courageous administrator.

“He expresses his deep sorrow at the loss of a patriot and national asset who played a significant role in shaping the democracy that Nigeria enjoys today.

“President Tinubu affirms that the greatest honour to champions of democracy like Nwosu is to ensure that elections in the country remain credible, transparent, and democratic, reflecting the people’s right to choose their leaders and shape their future.”

The President prayed that God grant the soul of the departed political scientist eternal rest and divine comfort to those who mourn him.
