Enugu council poll: Police assure security as parties sign peace accord
The Enugu State Police Command has assured residents of adequate security of life and property, as political parties, yesterday, signed the peace accord for Saturday’s local council elections in the state.
But major political parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) were absent during the signing of the peace accord.
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Accord Party (AP), whose state chairmen were present at the event, declined to sign, hinging their decision on the inability of the leading political parties to participate in the event.
The event put together by ActionAid, in collaboration with the South-Saharan Social Development Organisation (SSDO), was to foster peace, ensuring a level playing ground for participating political parties.
In attendance at the event was the Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), Prof. Chris Ngwu, state Chairman of Traditional Rulers Council, His Majesty, Igwe Samuel Asadu, Civil Society Organisations and representatives of political parties.
Uzuegbu assured the gathering that the police would protect life and property, asking them to feel free and participate in the election.
The Chairman of ENSIEC said that the commission is ready for the election, insisting that the state government had supported the commission to procure relevant materials for the exercise.
Ngwu vowed that the commission would not spear anyone who may attempt to derail the process, assuring that he is prepared to give the state a credible election.
