Ex-LG chairman denies looting council’s property in Ebonyi
The immediate past Chairman of Onicha Local Council of Ebonyi State, Chidiebere Uzor, yesterday, denied allegations that he vandalised council property before leaving office.
The allegation was levelled against Uzo following a viral video, which showed that he was culpable.
The video emanated shortly after the new chairman inspected the office.
In a telephone interview, Uzor denied the allegations, stating that he was shocked by the video after handing it over successfully.
He wondered why the allegations were coming days after his exit, stressing that the aim of those behind it was to tarnish the reputation he had built over the years.
He said: “I was shocked when I saw the viral video showing an empty office and my successor accusing me of vandalising property before leaving office.
“Why is the video coming days after I handed over successfully to him? As you can see, I am resting after serving my people for two years. I am not around, that is why I am reacting through a telephone interview.”
The viral video showed empty offices, destroyed chairs, tables, television sets, refrigerators, cupboards, and essential documents, among other items belonging to the council.
The newly sworn-in chairman of the council, Okechukwu Ogbuoffia, had disclosed that when he inspected the council secretariat with his officials, he met an empty office.
However, stakeholders of the council have called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the former chairman to serve as a deterrent to other political officeholders.
