Former Jigawa State Governor and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Sule Lamido, has warned that the prolonged internal crisis within the party could cost it some of its most experienced and loyal members, as he disclosed that he may be forced to reconsider his continued stay in the opposition party.
Lamido, a founding member of the PDP and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, said the failure of the party’s leadership to urgently resolve deepening divisions could compel him to align with another political platform.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service monitored in Kaduna State on Tuesday, the elder statesman expressed frustration over what he described as deliberate efforts by some individuals to weaken and ultimately destroy the PDP.
“If we cannot find solutions to the problems facing the PDP, I will have no option but to look elsewhere,” Lamido said.
He lamented that a party which once served as a broad and unifying platform for Nigerians across ethnic and regional lines had become consumed by internal wrangling, leaving many committed members disillusioned and uncertain about its future.
According to Lamido, the inability or unwillingness of the party leadership to address the crisis decisively has worsened tensions and created an atmosphere of distrust within the party’s ranks.
He warned that if the infighting persists, it could further erode the PDP’s strength and relevance ahead of future electoral contests, particularly at a time when a strong and cohesive opposition is needed in the country’s democratic space.
The former governor said that while he remains firmly committed to democratic values and ideals, he would not hesitate to take a decision that aligns with his political principles and personal conviction should the situation fail to improve.
“If things continue not to go the right way, I will take whatever decision I consider best for myself,” he added.
Lamido’s remarks come amid ongoing leadership and zoning disputes within the PDP, which have continued to generate tension and uncertainty within the party.
