The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) yesterday hailed Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s leadership in Enugu State, saying he has turned the economic challenges of the state into huge blessings.

In a statement by its Enugu State chairman, John Nwobodo and State’s Secretary, Ken Onyekaonwu, IPAC stated that at a time recession had become ‘customized excuse’ for non-performance by elected leaders, Ugwuanyi has revolutionalised governance to the delight of the citizens. The group said: “Two and half years in office, the governor has managed with prudence, integrity, transparency and accountability the state’s lean resources paying salaries of civil servants and pensions of retirees as and when due. We wish to commend the governor clearly and unequivocally on the judicious and transparent utilization of the Paris and London Club refunds to Enugu.

“We recall vividly part of governor’s inaugural speech where he narrated how political associates of his told him that this was not the best time to rule the state. However, it is obvious he was not scared by the realities of the time.

IPAC also hinged its appraisal of Ugwuanyi on the administration’s 4-point Agenda of employment generation, social services and good governance, rural development and security and justice. The group commended the education sector, which it said has received tremendous boost with the employment of over 1000 Primary School teachers with the recruitment of another batch currently ongoing.

“IPAC appreciates the administration for the recent award of contracts for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of urban roads and rural roads including the New Market-Miliken Hill Road leading to Ngwo. A couple of days ago, the governor approved N1.4 billion contracts for the reconstruction of various road projects in the state. This is a very heart-warming development.

“The Governor has bestrode governance like a colossus and stands tall among his peers exhibiting candour, humility and simplicity in his approach to governance. We commend him for his open door policy, inclusion and accommodation, which have endeared him to the people.Without mincing words, we would say that the Governor has elevated governance to a higher pedestal in Enugu State”

Meanwhile, the state’s chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Ben Nwoye faulted the administration security policy, urging it to protect the sanctity of the state civil service and administer sanctions on erring officers to avoid breakdown in law and order.

In a reaction to IPAC commendations of Governor Ugwuanyi, the APC spokesman said, “The government would not pride itself as doing well when there was no protection for persons serving in it.

According to him, “It shocks the conscience that a Permanent Secretary could be brutalised, humiliated and stripped in the premises of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB) with pictures of his nakedness shown all over by hired thugs allegedly led by the chairman of the board without a pronouncement from government several weeks after the incident took place.

Lamenting that the alleged silence of the government over the incident could lead to break down in law and order in the state, he stated that the growing silence was an indication that the matter has been swept under the carpet, despite warnings against it by labour organisations in the state.
