A Kano High Court has nullified the dissolution of the state leadership of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), affirming Abdullahi Abiya as the Chairman of the party.
The court held that the National Working Committee (NWC) acted outside the powers conferred by its constitution and improperly relied on its provisions to carry out a blanket dissolution without the involvement of the National Executive Committee (NEC).
Abiya had dragged the party’s NWC before Justice Nasiru Saminu, challenging the dissolution of the party leadership in Kano without a fair hearing. He also sued Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa for parading himself as the parallel chairman of the party in Kano.
In his judgment, Justice Saminu set aside the dissolution and granted a perpetual injunction restraining the party and its agents from interfering with the tenure of the duly elected State, Local Government, and Ward Executive Committees in Kano State.
The judge equally upheld the expulsion of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s anointed candidate, Dungurawa, from the NNPP as declared by his Gargari ward and ratified by the Dawakin-Tofa council and party’s state executive council. The court held that the expulsion was valid, lawful and in full compliance with the party’s constitution.
In a related development, former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He announced his defection yesterday at his Kano residence.
Shekarau served as Kano governor from 2003 to 2011 under the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
In 2014, he joined the PDP after his former party, the ANPP, merged to become the APC.
In 2018, the former Kano governor resigned from the PDP to join the APC.
In May 2022, Shekarau dumped APC for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) after months of leadership tussle with Abdullahi Ganduje, also a former governor of Kano.
In August 2022, Shekarau decamped from NNPP to the PDP.
Addressing party loyalists, the ex-governor said the decision followed wide consultations and careful consideration of available political options.
“We have weighed all the options and arrived at this collective resolution. Do you all agree?” he asked, urging anyone opposed to the move to speak up,” he said.
In his resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Shekarau said his exit took immediate effect.
