Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has raised alarm over alleged moves by powerful interests to shield the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and his loyalists from party discipline, warning that such desperation could endanger Nigeria’s fragile democracy.
In a statement on his verified Facebook page, Lamido said snippets circulating within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) suggest that some state chairmen were summoned by “lords of Nigeria” and directed to resist any attempt to sanction Wike and his camp.
He described the development as a calculated attempt to quicken the collapse of the PDP, which, he warned, would in turn destabilise Nigeria’s democratic order.
“This desperation to hasten the collapse of the PDP will inevitably hasten the collapse of our nascent democracy, with dire consequences,” Lamido cautioned.
The former governor, who is one of the founding fathers of the PDP, called on political actors across party lines—both in government and in opposition—to set aside personal interests and work together in defence of the democratic system.
“Let us all unite and save democracy—the APC government and all the opposition parties alike!” he urged.
Lamido’s warning comes amid growing internal rifts within the PDP, with Wike and his loyalists often at the centre of controversies over party discipline, loyalty, and alignment with the ruling APC.
Analysts say Lamido’s intervention underscores deepening fears that Nigeria’s opposition space could fragment further if the PDP fails to resolve its internal crisis.
