Former president Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned the judiciary and the police over their roles in the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, warning that the political tension may destabilise Nigeria, similar to the collapse of the Old Western Region.

In a statement he signed on Saturday, Jonathan expressed concern over the escalating situation.

Jonathan said he’s “aware that the local government election taking place in Rivers State today, October 5, has attracted significant interest from political actors.”

He noted that the recent political developments in Rivers State are a “serious concern for all, especially those committed to democracy and actors in the peace and security sector of our nation.”

He stressed that elections are the bedrock of democracy as they are the main source of legitimacy.

“This process renews citizens’ faith in their country, allowing them to have a voice in determining who governs them.”

Jonathan highlighted that every election is crucial, whether national or subnational, as it honours and strengthens democracy.

He stressed the importance of all stakeholders, particularly state institutions, in promoting a sound democratic culture where periodic elections are a vital component.

He added that “democracy is our collective asset, and its growth depends on the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and pursuing peace and justice at all times.”

He cautioned that “state institutions, especially security agencies, must avoid actions that could lead to the breakdown of law and order.”

Jonathan also raised concerns over the local government elections, which have fueled tensions due to opposition from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and his associates, who control the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Governor Sim Fubara, meanwhile, insisted that the election proceed despite the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
