The only surviving son of the late Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Mohammad, Abba Risqua, has expressed interest in rejoining politics to strengthen the country’s democratic system.
Abba, who contested the gubernatorial primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano in 2014, lost to Sagir Takai, who emerged as the party’s candidate.
The soft-spoken son of the general subsequently featured on the ballot as running mate to the PDP candidate in the 2015 governorship poll, which the party lost to Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Abba later announced his exit from politics in 2017, citing personal reasons.
Speaking after a special prayer session to mark the 50th anniversary of his late father in Kano, the young Mohammed specifically affirmed his willingness to protect his father’s legacy in the public service.
Abba, who disclosed that his late father stood for justice, fairness, equity, honesty, and anti-corruption, said those in positions of authority needed to step up their responsibilities to make life better for Nigerians.
The Chief Imam of General Murtala Mosque, who led the prayer session, Sheikh Kabir Badamasi-Dantaura, prayed for the repose of the late general’s soul.
Also speaking, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Aminu Bashir Wali described the late Muhammad as a leader with rare qualities, noting that he was honest and passionate about the welfare of Nigerians.
Similarly, the Sarkin Fadan Kano and Hakimin Fagge, Ado Kurawa, a cousin of the late Muhammed, urged people, particularly those in Northern Nigeria, to continue praying for him. He called on Muslims to recite Suratul Ikhlas daily for the repose of his soul.
In his remarks, independent researcher Ibrahim Ado Kurawa said the late Muhammad left enduring legacies despite serving only about 200 days as Head of State.
