NANS Ogun declares June 1 protest, alleges harassment of student leaders

The Ogun State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC), alongside Presidents of Students’ Union Governments (SUGs) across the state, has announced plans to stage a mass protest on June 1 over alleged harassment and intimidation of student leaders.

The student body accused the Special Assistant to the Ogun State Governor on Student Affairs, Adeyemi Azeez Amoo, of using security agencies to victimise students and student leaders over issues relating to student union activities.

In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by the Chairman of NANS Ogun JCC, Comrade Olabode Faruq Boluwatife, the group expressed concern over what it described as a growing trend of intimidation and persecution of student stakeholders in the state.

While commending the Ogun State Government for maintaining relative peace and fostering engagement with students, the association said it was unfortunate that actions capable of creating tension within the student community were being encouraged.

According to the statement, students and student leaders have the constitutional right to freedom of association, expression and participation in student affairs without fear of harassment.

The association also criticised what it described as the involvement of the police in matters relating to student union affairs, arguing that security agencies should focus on pressing security challenges facing the country.

It cited the recent abduction of students and teachers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, noting that the victims had remained in captivity for more than two weeks.

“At a time when the nation is confronted with serious security challenges, including the unfortunate abduction of students and teachers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, it is disappointing that security resources are being diverted towards matters relating to student union affairs,” the statement read.

The group alleged that nine student stakeholders had been invited by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, following a petition allegedly submitted by the governor’s aide.

It further claimed that some of those invited were already involved in court cases instituted by the same official, describing the latest development as part of a coordinated attempt to intimidate and silence student leaders.

NANS Ogun JCC warned the Ogun State Police Command against allowing itself to be used to settle disputes within the student movement, insisting that student leaders should not be treated as criminals for expressing dissenting opinions or participating in campus politics.

The association maintained that the student community in Ogun State had remained peaceful and committed to constructive engagement and urged security agencies to remain professional and impartial in carrying out their duties.

The student body subsequently announced a peaceful protest scheduled for June 1, 2026, at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

According to the organisers, the demonstration will draw attention to the continued captivity of the abducted students and teachers in Oyo State and alleged harassment, victimisation and intimidation of students and student leaders in Ogun State.

The group said the protest would also serve as a platform to demand stronger security measures for educational institutions and the protection of students’ democratic rights.

NANS assured residents that the protest would be peaceful, orderly and conducted within the ambit of the law.

The association restated its commitment to protecting the welfare, rights and democratic freedoms of students across Ogun State while pledging continued engagement with relevant authorities in the interest of justice and lasting peace.
