The National Assembly has taken a bold step toward modernising its communication system with the commissioning of a 22-rapporteur capacity ultra-modern newsroom for real-time monitoring and dissemination of legislative activities.
The digital facility, unveiled yesterday at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, signals a significant shift in how parliamentary proceedings would be documented, tracked and communicated to the public.
Commissioning the newsroom, Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, described the development as a strategic milestone in strengthening transparency and institutional efficiency.
“This newsroom is a strategic investment designed to strengthen information management, improve documentation of legislative activities, and enhance public engagement.
“In an era where communication defines credibility, this facility positions the National Assembly to project its work with professionalism and transparency,” he said.
Ogunlana emphasised that the project goes beyond physical infrastructure, describing it as part of a broader institutional reform agenda aimed at building capacity within the legislature’s information machinery.
He noted that the National Assembly complex is steadily evolving into a fully equipped democratic institution with modern facilities that reflect global parliamentary standards.
“With facilities such as the chapel, mosque, library, hospital, printing press, and now this state-of-the-art newsroom, we are gradually transforming this complex into more than a legislative hub,” he said.
“We are shaping it into a symbol of institutional strength and a destination of interest, a place that reflects the dignity and importance of democratic governance,” the clerk added.
While celebrating the milestone, Ogunlana urged staff and management to prioritise maintenance and responsible use of the facility.
Earlier in his welcome address, Secretary of the Research and Information Directorate, Dr. Barde Umoru, explained that the newsroom was conceived as a central communication nerve centre for the legislature.
