The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has hailed the successful conduct of its nationwide primaries, describing the exercise as a major milestone in the party’s rapid growth and a clear indication of its rising acceptance across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The presidential, governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly primaries, conducted between Thursday and Friday, witnessed an impressive turnout of party members and supporters in states across the federation, with voting centres recording high levels of participation and enthusiasm.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director Esq., the NDC said the largely peaceful and transparent exercise reflected the party’s commitment to internal democracy and grassroots participation.
According to the party, despite challenges posed by the Eid-el-Kabir holiday and transportation constraints in some parts of the country, members turned out in large numbers to take part in the historic exercise.
The statement noted that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alongside security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), monitored the process in several locations to ensure compliance with electoral guidelines and maintain order.
“The reports received from across the federation indicate that voting and affirmation exercises were conducted peacefully, while aspirants and supporters demonstrated remarkable maturity, discipline and commitment to democratic ideals,” the party stated.
The NDC also drew attention to its innovative primary election model, which allowed aspirants to contest before purchasing nomination forms.
The party said the arrangement was designed to strengthen internal democracy, encourage broader participation and reduce financial obstacles for aspiring candidates.
Under the system, only aspirants who emerge victorious from the primaries will proceed to purchase nomination forms.
Party leaders and observers praised the exercise as one of the most inclusive internal electoral processes conducted by any political party in recent times, noting that the atmosphere at many voting centres was marked by optimism, celebration and renewed confidence in the party’s future.
Supporters were seen singing solidarity songs and expressing hope that the NDC would offer Nigerians a fresh political alternative anchored on transparency, accountability and people-centred governance.
The party described the successful conclusion of the primaries as a significant step in its march toward becoming a formidable national political force, adding that the National Working Committee would complete the collation of results before making official declarations from the party’s national headquarters.
With the scale of participation recorded nationwide, political analysts believe the exercise has further strengthened the NDC’s momentum and positioned the party as one of the emerging forces to watch in the build-up to the 2027 elections.
