Labour Party (LP) has commended the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for thwarting an attempted burglary at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday night.

In a statement issued yesterday, Ken Asogwa, Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, said suspects apprehended in connection with the incident are already cooperating with security agencies and providing intelligence that could expose those behind the act.

Asogwa noted that the timely police intervention restored calm at the secretariat, while commending party supporters across the country for remaining vigilant.

He warned that the party would no longer tolerate internal sabotage, alleging that elements linked to the former leadership attempted to gain unlawful access to the premises under the cover of darkness.

“The leadership of the Labour Party is no longer in dispute,” the statement said, stressing that court judgments on the matter are definitive and have been fully implemented by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the opposition party, the electoral umpire has formally recognised Nenadi Usman as National Chairman and Darlington Nwokocha as National Secretary, in line with the court’s decision.

The statement further urged security agencies to pursue all individuals using the party’s name to mislead or defraud the public, describing such actors as impostors operating without lawful authority.

The party also cautioned members against actions capable of undermining its stability, insisting that Nigeria operates under the rule of law and not mob pressure.

The incident occurred barely 24 hours after the Usman-led Interim National Working Committee (INWC) formally assumed control of the party’s national secretariat in Utako, Abuja.

However, Usman and her predecessor, Julius Abure, have traded blame over the incident, with the Abure camp denying that there was any attack on the office and accusing the Usman-led National Caretaker Committee of burgling.

The Federal High Court had, while upholding the appointment of the Usman-led NCC, affirmed that Abure’s tenure as chairman had elapsed and ordered INEC to recognise Usman as the authentic leadership of LP.

But, barely 24 hours after taking possession of the party’s national secretariat, the caretaker committee disclosed that some miscreants believed to be working for unnamed sponsors tried to break into the office.

Speaking through her Senior Special Adviser on Media, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the interim chairman commended the police “for their swift response in flushing out the vandals and miscreants who attempted to break into the Labour Party National Secretariat last night.”

While disclosing that the arrested suspects are currently assisting the police with useful information that may lead to the identification of their sponsors, the interim leadership said it would not condone guerrilla tactics in settling political differences.
