The Minority Leader of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Lukman Adeleye, has called on Nigerians to support the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, even as he formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Adeleye, who represents Odogbolu State Constituency, defected alongside other members of the minority caucus, in a move that further underscores the continuing erosion of opposition ranks ahead of the general elections.
The lawmaker said that Tinubu’s administration had initiated reforms capable of repositioning the country, noting that a second term would consolidate ongoing efforts to stabilise Nigeria’s political and economic systems.
According to him, the administration has laid a foundation that could steer the country out of its current challenges.
He stressed that continuity would ensure a more inclusive governance structure where citizens can thrive without fear of economic, political or social marginalisation.
He also appealed to Nigerians to endure the current economic hardship, describing it as temporary and necessary for long-term gains.
“The current challenges, though difficult, are not comparable to the benefits these reforms will yield in the near future. President Tinubu, Governor Dapo Abiodun and other APC leaders are committed to rebuilding the country and ensuring a better future for all,” he said.
Adeleye dismissed insinuations that his defection was driven by political survival ahead of 2027, insisting that his decision was informed by his experience in governance since assuming office.
He noted that effective governance requires collaboration between the executive and legislative arms, adding that his move was aimed at strengthening that synergy.
“What is happening today is in appreciation of the strides of the Ogun State Government under Dapo Abiodun and the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
“Governance is a collective responsibility, and this step is in the interest of development,” he said.
Reacting to the development, APC leaders in Odogbolu Local Council welcomed the lawmaker into the party, expressing confidence that the ruling party would retain its dominance in the state.
The APC Ward 9 Chairman in Ibefun, Yekini Rasheed, described Adeleye’s defection as a significant boost, assuring him of the party’s support for his second-term ambition.
