• Expert canvasses death penalty for corruption
• Minister’s visit is private, says Ondo APC
ONDO State Trauma Centre, Ondo has been described as adequate for Post Graduate Residency Training in Radiology and Anaesthesia.
This was disclosed by an accreditation team, which comprises the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) and National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) while briefing Governor Olusegun Mimiko on their findings after visiting the centre.
The accreditation panel was led by the Chairman, Faculty of Anaesthesia, West African College of Surgeons, Professor Stella Eguma and the Chairman, Faculty of Radiology, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, Professor Adeyinka Abiodun.
According to Prof. Abiodun, while briefing Mimiko on the Faculty of Radiology, the team was overwhelmed with the level of transformation in the medical village, particularly the trauma centre.
He noted that the governor has raised the bar of medical profession in Nigeria by their findings, stressing that the various facilities as well as the personnel manning the centre are adequate for accreditation for the residency training, noting that this would further strengthen qualitative healthcare delivery in the country.
The chairman of WACS, Prof. Eguma, said Mimiko’s giant strides in the health sector was laudable and promised the college’s partnership with the state government in improving the achievements on ground.
The governor, who claimed the concept of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, is to turn the state a tourist destination for qualitative healthcare delivery, noted that the investment became imperative considering the volume of resources Nigerians expend in seeking medical attention abroad.
Meanwhile, a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Gboyega Akerele yesterday advocated death penalty for those found guilty of corruption as a policy to curb illegal wealth acquisition in the country.
Akerele, who while speaking with journalists in Akure, viewed corruption beyond political office holders, said professionals are equally involved, as their demands from government and other selfish agitations often consume lives of innocent citizens.
He cited the case of workers who always embark on incessant strikes, even after their demands had been met, urging the government at all levels to be more concerned with what happen to their citizens by ensuring that they make lives more meaningful for all and sundry and not necessarily until people’s lives are toyed with.
He advocated the need to change the school syllabus right from primary schools to universities to check corruption at higher level as this will discourage people from taking things that do not belong to them before they get to the society.
Contrary to reports that the Minister of State for Niger Delta, Prof. Cladius Daramola shunned the leadership meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo over the weekend, the party has described the report as untrue.
This was contained in the statement made available yesterday to The Guardian by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Adesanya, stressing that the minister’s visit to Ondo State was private.
Adesanya said the visit last weekend was to honour the invitations of the Halu of Ode-Aye, Oba Williams Akinmusayo Akinlade, on the occasion of Layelu Day that took place Saturday, November 14, 2015.
He disclosed further that the minister also visited the Orunja of Odigbo, Oba Rufus Akinrinmade on the occasion of Isero Day, that took place same day with that of his hometown.
The APC chieftain, Adesanya, however, vouched for the minister, saying, “Prof. Daramola cannot and will not treat and disrespect our highly revered and esteemed party leaders, as it’s been reported in some quarters”, adding “it is the handiwork of our detractors that are not comfortable with the profile and integrity of Prof. Cladius Daramola and the rising popularity of our party, the APC in Ondo State.”
