Osinbajo still a member of APC, says ex-media aide

Yemi-Osinbajo

Laolu Akande, an ex-media aide to Yemi Osinbajo, has said that the former Vice President is still a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Akande also dismissed rumours that Osinbajo has left politics.

The former Senior Special Assistant on Media & Publicity to Osinbajo, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

Osinbajo has not been actively involved in politics since departing office as VP to former President Muhammad Buhari in 2023.

This led to rumours that the former university lecturer may have distanced himself from the APC and political activities in general.

The former Vice President had contested the APC primaries in 2022 but lost the party’s ticket to President Bola Tinubu, with some political analysts attributing his perceived withdrawal from politics to his loss.

Some others, however, felt he has decided to distance himself from politics to devote more time to his role as Global Advisor for the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet.

When asked by NAN about his former principal’s political life, Akande said he would not involve Osinbajo in personal commentary, saying the latter had not informed him of any decision to leave politics and that, to his knowledge, he remains a member of the APC.

According to Akande, Osinbajo would attend any event which involves the
APC that required his presence.

“I don’t want to get the man (Osinbajo) involved in my own commentary, but there is no reason to think that he is no longer in the APC. He is still a member of the APC,” Akande said.

“If he gets an invitation to the caucus, you know, he will be there. I don’t know anything about him leaving the party.”
