Sowore declares to run for presidency on AAC platform
Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has declared to run for presidency on the platform of African Action Congress (AAC).Sowore, who made the declaration yesterday in Abuja, called on youths and progressive people to embrace the party. Addressing a conference at the party’s headquarters, he said his aspiration, which started as a movement, would now contest for the highest office in the country.
He, however, cited the controversial amendment to the Electoral Act and funding of election, as two critical areas that might impede the conduct of the 2019 general elections.
The presidential aspirant said those in charge of governance must know their job, as it relates to extant laws for elections.“He said: “If they don’t, we will be forced to intervene by ensuring that we draw the attention of the world to any attempt to sabotage the election.
“As we are aware, there are two political parties embroiled in internal crisis. As a result, they know that they are not prepared to run in this election, because they have all been rejected and discredited.” Sowore said it was likely that it is collaboration between the two parties to ensure that the election does not hold next year.
“But we are counting and watching what is happening. As soon as we determine how to intervene, we shall do so in our own little or serious way, as the nation might require of us,” he said. Sowore’s said he has been to 26 states of the federation in six months to sell his candidature, despite that AAC was among the 23 political parties that were registered on Tuesday.
He stressed that not even President Muhammadu Buhari “with nine private jets has been able to do that, as even existing political parties are not talking about issues, because politicians think that they can buy votes.”Sowore said his party was ready to enter into a possible coalition, adding: “But any party that wants to align with us will have to do so on the basis of principle.”
