Urhobo Youths Back Oborevwori for Second Term

Urhobo Youth Leaders Association (UYLA)

The Urhobo Youth Leaders Association (UYLA), Abuja/Diaspora Chapter, has endorsed Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for a second term, pointing to infrastructure projects, welfare programmes and other government interventions as the basis for its decision.

The endorsement followed the association’s expanded Executive and General Assembly meeting in Abuja on August 18, 2026, where members also passed a vote of confidence in the administration.

In a communiqué signed by its President, Comrade Kennedy Ejename; General Secretary, Comrade Jonathan Ibrebru-Idonor; and Public Relations Officer, Comrade Moses Itemire, UYLA said its position was based on what it described as the “verifiable, evidence-based performance” of the administration under the MORE Agenda.

The group listed ongoing road and urban renewal projects among the areas it considered significant, particularly developments along the Warri-Effurun axis.

It cited the Warri-Effurun flyover and road projects being executed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, the N39.3 billion Otovwodo Flyover in Ughelli and the proposed Uromi Junction Flyover in Agbor.

UYLA also referenced road and drainage projects across the state’s 25 local government areas, saying the projects had improved connectivity in several communities and supported economic activities.

Beyond infrastructure, the association pointed to government welfare measures, including the widow support scheme, which it said provides monthly stipends and health insurance coverage to beneficiaries.

It also listed pension payments, implementation of the new minimum wage, payment of promotion arrears and recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff among the issues that influenced its assessment of the administration.

On youth and women empowerment, the group cited the MORE Grant, D-CARES and MORE-Biz programmes, saying the initiatives had provided financial assistance and business support to residents.

In the health and education sectors, UYLA mentioned medical equipment, support for indigent patients, health insurance enrolment and bursary payments to more than 30,000 students.

The association also pointed to reforms in the electricity sector, including the establishment of the Delta State Electricity Regulatory Commission and plans to expand renewable energy infrastructure across government facilities and institutions.

UYLA further cited the reported rise in Delta State‘s Internally Generated Revenue from N84 billion to N200 billion in 2025 as an indicator of improved revenue mobilisation and efforts to strengthen the state’s economic base.

However, the association’s endorsement was not framed solely around projects in the Urhobo-speaking areas.

UYLA described Oborevwori as a “Pan-Delta governor”, arguing that projects and policies under the administration had been spread across different parts of the state.

The group said it would mobilise Urhobo youths in Abuja, northern Nigeria and the Diaspora in support of the governor’s re-election bid.

It also called on Deltans across ethnic, religious and political lines to support the continuation of the MORE Agenda, while urging the governor to maintain attention to infrastructure, welfare, youth empowerment and inclusive development.

The endorsement comes as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 elections, with interest groups and political actors beginning to take positions on candidates and potential contenders across the country.
