Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has finally broken his silence on why his administration allows women to serve as vice chairpersons of the local government councils of the state.

Speaking on Friday while playing host to the vice chairpersons of the twenty-three local government councils of the state, his decision to allow women to emerge as deputy chairpersons in the last local government councils election, he said, is part of a broader effort to bring women into leadership roles.

More to that, the decision, according to him, is geared at enhancing gender inclusion in the scheme of activities in the state, stating that, “the initiative is designed to highlight the contributions of women and enable them to add value to the government’s efforts at all levels.”

The governor, who argued that the inclusion of women in key positions is a strategic step towards fostering development and ensuring diverse perspectives in governance, announced that the initiative is expected to promote gender equality and enhance the representation of women in decision-making processes across the state.

He also announced that he has directed the deputy governor of the state who is also a female to find roles for women to play in the local governments apart from deputizing the chairmen.

Fintiri who said his administration is mindful of the roles played by women in Adamawa during the 2023 general election, challenged them to work tirelessly round the clock to herald the much-desired development to the grassroots.

While encouraging them to take advantage of the opportunities at their disposal, working with relevant stakeholders to make a difference, as well as sacrificing for the good of their localities and the state at large, he believed it has become necessary.

Speaking, the Chairperson of the deputy chairpersons of the local government councils, Sarah Samuel, said the governor has proven to be gender sensitive and unbiased against what was obtained in the past in Adamawa.

She pledged their unflinching support for the, stating that “we have collectively agreed to work round the clock to ensure the actualization of the Fintiri administration’s eight-point agenda.”

Before the council election took place in July 2024, the governor directed the leadership of the state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to give room to women to jostle for the position of deputy local government chairpersons.
