Council, firm to accelerate EDGE green building certification

The Green Building Council Nigeria (GBCN) and Sintal have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to increase the adoption of Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) green building certification in the country.

Nigeria’s building and construction sector is among the fastest growing in Africa, driven by rapid urbanisation, population growth, and infrastructural demand.

However, despite this expansion, the industry faces a critical sustainability gap. Many new developments are still constructed without regard for environmental efficiency, long-term resource use, or carbon impact. The consequences include high energy consumption, water scarcity, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and elevated operating costs—all of which threaten Nigeria’s broader development and climate goals.

This collaborative effort represents a key milestone in transforming Nigeria’s built environment by promoting sustainable construction practices and integrating internationally recognised green building standards.

Speaking at the signing of the agreement, Co-Founder of Sintali, Eleni Polychroniadou, noted that Nigeria holds tremendous potential to lead in sustainable development and by equipping the market with the right tools and knowledge, firms can support a rapid and inclusive transition to net zero.”

He said, “We are excited to partner with the Green Building Council Nigeria to advance green construction across the country.”

In his remarks, President of the Green Building Council Nigeria, Danjuma Waniko, said the partnership marks an important milestone in their mission to transform Nigeria’s building market and empower professionals and developers to embrace green building at scale.

Waniko stated that by combining the firm’s global certification expertise with local insights, “we’re making EDGE certification more accessible, practical, and impactful—helping to make green building the norm for everyone.”
