FG to review national determined contributions
The Federal Government has put mechanism in place towards reviewing the existing National Determined Contributions (NDCs), formulated as part of Paris Agreement.
Director of Department of Climate Change, Dr. Yerima Peter Tarfa revealed this at stakeholders’ consultation forum on national climate change policy and response strategy in Abuja.
He said the 2012 policy covered five key areas, which government considered extending to accommodate emerging critical global environmental issues in the country.
Also, Prof. Emmanuel Oladipo explained that many stakeholders did not object the policy because federal government is known for formulating policies that are not implementable.
Oladipo stressed that inputs from citizens would have made them to own the document, while there should also be implementation plan for climate change adaptation and mitigation.
He called on ministries departments and agencies to contribute meaningfully to the review of seven years policy on national programmes on climate change resilience.
Similarly, Mustapha Iyabo of Department of Agricultural Land and Climate Change Management Services, noted the close relationship between food security and climate change in the agricultural sector, stressing that opportunities exist to transform the sector towards climate-smart systems.
