Poised to ensure production, distribution and sale of potable water to her teeming population, Lagos state government has embarked on the construction of three new water plants valued at N50 billion in the State. On completion, the plants will produce a cumulative 700 million litres per day, which will complement other efforts to address perennial water shortage in the state.

According to the state’s Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Babatunde Adejare, the plants when operational will bridge the difference between supply and demand and ensure that residents have access to potable water.

He stressed that though the provision of water supply is capital intensive, the state government, is however, determined to venture into the project through Public Private Partnership initiative in order to ensure adequate production, distribution and sale of potable water to all residents and consumers in the state.

The commissioner, who also announced a new policy on sales of sachet and bottle water, said henceforth manufacturers of packaged water through boreholes must show evidence of purity or they will be made to quit the business.

“The completed 315 mm UPVC at Gbagada General Hospital has made water available to Gbagada, Sholuyi and Medina Estate.” he added. These efforts, he said, is making water supply bit stable throughout Lagos metropolis.

Other on-going projects embarked to improve water supply in the state, the commissioner said, include, Second National Urban Water Sector reform project funded by Agence Francaise Development (AFD) for rehabilitation / expansion of Water Distribution Network in the Lagos service Area 2, that is Surulere, Yaba/ Ebute Metta, Iwaya and Itire) and Service Area 8 made up of Victoria Island and Lekki.

“There is also construction of 70 MGD Adiyan Water works Phase 11 including ND1600mm ductile Iron pipes for raw water mains between Akute intake and Adiyan head works”. He added.

Also as parts of efforts to find a lasting solution to issues arising from over billing, no billion, double billing, no water, water leakages and non reflection of payments, he said, the corporation has carried out verification exercise of its customers in Surulere, Oworonsoki, Yaba, Ebute Metta, Iwaya axis of the state and would be extended to other parts of Lagos metropolis in due course, so as to ensue that every home is connect to Lagos water.
