Lagos removes illegal structures in Lekki waterfront

Lagos State Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development (MWID) has kick-started the removal of illegal structures as part of enforcement efforts at the Okunde Bluewater Scheme along Lekki Coastal Road, Lekki.

The authority dismantled newly emerging shanties constructed along the corridors. The state Commissioner for the Ministry, Ekundayo Alebiosu, disclosed that the exercise was a continuation of previous clean-up efforts and a firm deterrent to those attempting to reoccupy government-owned land with unauthorised structures.

The commissioner lamented that the ministry cleared this large expanse of land late last year, and it is no longer business as usual, adding that any attempts to rebuild shanties or makeshift structures on the site will be met with swift enforcement.

He said, “These structures pose not only an environmental hazard but also a significant security risk. More importantly, they are not in line with the Lagos State Mega City Master Plan.”

He pointed out the government’s commitment to reclaiming and strategically utilising the area for the development of a world-class Bluewater Scheme and a coastal road network to benefit residents.

He assured that there is sustained monitoring and periodic enforcement exercises that would be used to preserve the integrity of the cleared site. The commissioner stressed that the progress made during the ministry’s reclamation exercise in September last year would not be allowed to be undone.

He reiterated the mission of the ministry to secure and transform all government-owned waterfronts across Lagos State in alignment with the vision of a clean, secure, and globally competitive mega city.

‘’The background of environmental management arises from the economic exploitation of the earth’s resources, which are found on the earth’s crust and the consequences of such actions. This is critical to the spatial expression that makes geography inevitable in the sustainability agenda. Spatial domains are characteristic of grid identities that show locations.’’
