Lagos sets September deadline for road rehabilitation
FOLLOWING public outcry on the conditions of some roads in the state, the Lagos Government has announced September deadline for the completion of roads under rehabilitation in the metropolis.
The roads that would be completed by the end of September include Oke-Afa-Ikotun Egbe, Regina Mondi, Mushin, Brown Street, Oshodi, Naval Dockyard, Apapa and Ipaja-Ayobo road, among others.
Addressing the media personnel during site tours last week, the General Manager of Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC), Mr. Ayotunde Sodeinde, an engineer, said the mandate giving by the Lagos Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, is to ensure that these roads are in good shape, and completed by the end of September.
Ayotunde said that the 6.67 kilometre Oke Afa-Ikotun Egbe had been in terrible shape, forcing commuters to abandon one side of the road. “Apart from the fact that the road became impassable, thereby creating gridlock at several locations, the economic loss and inconveniences being created cannot be valued. As such, we need to deploy the needed resources, men and materials to the site and ensure that we meet the September deadline,” he said.
He said the need to fix the roads became necessary due to heavy down pour witnessed recently in the state and that the roads earmarked for repair are those with high vehicular movement, including commercial vehicles used by large number of commuters.
Shodeinde said Ambode was concerned about the state of the roads and directed the corporation to commence work immediately. “We cannot continue to blame weather condition for the hardship being experienced by our people. The corporation will take advantage of any dry period to quickly move to site and carry out maintenance operations during the day or night ”.
While appealing to the residents for more patience on the road maintenance needs, he said the corporation’s operations will assume a more robust dimension, which will enable them to feel its impact, especially when the rains wind up.
The maintenance activities, Shodeinde said, will be carried out using either asphalt premix or paving stones and other palliative measures, all in an attempt to improve the motoring experience in the state.
