NCF plants trees to control erosion in FCT school
The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) has carried out a tree planting exercise in memory of the late Prof Unionmwan Edebiri, who was passionate about controlling soil erosion in Government Junior Secondary School, Kepygi in Abuja.
NCF Zonal Coordinator, Mohammed Boyi, who performed the ceremony in the school, lauded the family of the deceased professor of French for supporting the exercise and revealed that 20 trees were needed to check erosion in the school.
Boyi said the intervention is timely, as Nigeria’s vegetation cover is degraded and needs more trees to be planted to replace the ones cut down, saying that the trees will contribute to improving the topography of the premises.
He explained that the country has less than four per cent of its forest left and needs more trees to be planted. He called on Nigerians to emulate the Edebiri family, plant more fast-growing shade trees to cover the people and wildlife.
To address the current impact of climate change, he said NCF has created awareness on how people can interact with their natural environment to minimise impacts that can be detrimental to the ecosystem and environment.
Also speaking, the daughter of the late professor, Mrs Edugie Amihere, outlined her father’s achievements to include, teaching and planting trees to control soil erosion prevalent in the area.
The Vice Principal (Administration), Fatokun Adejoke, thanked the group for choosing to remember the late professor and the school, promising to nourish and take care of the tree seedlings to serve as a legacy.
