NIESV charges practitioners on capacity, ethical standards

The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Lagos branch, has urged practitioners to maintain excellence, uphold integrity in transactions, strengthen technical competence, and adhere to the highest ethical standards to enhance real estate’s role as a driver of economic growth.

The charge was given by the new branch Chairman, Mr Tosin Kadiri, at his investiture as the 29th chairman and the induction of the new executive committee in Lagos. Kadiri reminded practitioners that their work directly impacts lives from providing shelter to facilitating commerce, and shaping sustainable urban growth.

He stressed that the professional body’s mandate is to protect public interest, enhance members’ capacity, and lead innovation across real estate practice, valuation, facilities management, project management, property management, land administration, and emerging areas such as PropTech and green buildings.

He outlined plans to advance professional excellence and empower members through improved engagement, continuous development, collaboration and partnerships, advocacy, welfare programmes, and youth development via the “Catch Them Young” initiative.

“We cannot achieve these aspirations alone. I seek the collaboration of every member and stakeholder. Let us embrace teamwork, constructive dialogue, and a shared vision. Shun rivalry, embrace unity, and put the profession’s interest above personal ambition,” Kadiri urged.

Guest speaker and former Chairman/Managing Director of Mobil Oil Nigeria Limited, Olu Onakoya, speaking on “Achieving Transformation through New Leadership, Thinking and Vision”, advised the new leaders to lead by example, adopt inclusive leadership, embrace consensus building, and maintain ethical and statutory compliance.

“The NIESV brand must never be compromised. Membership selection and sanctions for ethical breaches are crucial. Embrace young professionals, adopt interactive technology, but maintain NIESV values and standards,” Onakoya said.

Chairman of Adron Homes and Properties Limited, Adetola Emmanuelking, noted that leadership in the profession demands more than credentials, it requires vision, diplomacy, and inclusiveness. He urged Kadiri to be transformational and uphold the profession’s ethics.

“I am confident the branch will experience renewed energy, deeper engagement, and broader impact. With unity, there is no limit to what this administration can achieve,” Emmanuelking stated.

Past chairman, Joe Idudu, raised concerns over the high cost of land and stressed that true professionalism remains the only way to sustain the practice. Immediate past chairman, Gbenga Ismail, commended members for their constructive criticism and trust during his tenure, describing Kadiri as a man of integrity and vision, who will serve the branch and the wider body “exceedingly well.”
