The Sector Skills Council for Building in Nigeria (SSCBiN) has said the recent admittance of the council into the World Skills International will enhance Nigeria’s export of skilled labour to needy countries.
The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) devolved to the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) the mandate of a Sector Skills Council under the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF); a decision that placed the council at the heart of skills system in the construction industry.
The mandate enabled CORBON to discharge the roles and responsibilities of a Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the construction sector. The council is saddled with the responsibility of training artisans to bridge the gap in the construction industry.
The council’s President, Dr Samson Opaluwah, disclosed this to journalists while speaking on Nigeria’s admittance into the global body. Opaluwah explained that the council membership opens opportunities for Nigerian youth to participate in international skills competitions, gain exposure to global best practices, and develop their skills in various trades and occupations.
He emphasised that the development sets the stage for the export of skilled labour from Nigeria to needy nations, adding that this will enhance diaspora earnings and remittance to the nation.
Opaluwah said: “We celebrate the official admission of Nigeria into the World Skills International, a global organisation dedicated to promoting vocational training and skills development. This milestone marks a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to enhance Nigeria’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system.”
Opaluwah further said the achievement demonstrates the entrenchment of the NSQF to provide the youth with the opportunities, and skills required to succeed in the global economy.
