Ondo begins water channelisation project, targets 500,000 homes

The Ondo state government has begun the construction and channelisation of water projects across the state.The government also reinstated the commitment to provide access to clean water for 500,000 households and approximately two million individuals.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting on urban water reform and sanitation project at the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) in Akure, Commissioner for Water Resources, Public Sanitation and Hygiene, Sunday Akinwalere, said the project aims to create job opportunities for skilled workers and enhance sanitation.

He said: “This project is not about providing clean water but also about transforming our state. We need the support of every resident and stakeholder to make this initiative successful. It’s a comprehensive effort that aims to improve hygiene and create job opportunities.

“We are also installing modern toilet facilities in strategic locations, as we aim to promote better hygiene and make our state more beautiful.” He said: “For over 30 years, the issue of inadequate potable water supply has plagued our communities. With the governor’s approval, we are finally addressing this problem head-on. This project will significantly improve the quality of life for our people.

“Our goal is to provide access to clean water for 500,000 households and approximately two million individuals. This is a monumental task, but it is one we are ready to undertake.”

Also speaking, the Technical Consultant to the project, Kehinde Adebayo, said the project’s goal includes repairing and revitalising all previously abandoned mechanical equipment, treatment plants, storage facilities, and pipelines.

He said the comprehensive approach would ensure that there is a reliable and efficient water supply system. Chairman of the Grievance and Dispute Committee, Solomon Adelegan, said the committee has reached out to property owners in the project areas to ensure a smooth commencement and minimising disruptions.
